NIGER

Where the sand of the Sahara slowly devours the red land of the Sahel, history is not read in books, but in the mud walls of Agadez and in the gazes of the Tuareg. Starting from vibrant Niamey, we will travel up the country along ancient routes, from the grazing lands of the last West African white giraffes to the banco architecture of Dosso and Tahoua, and then to Agadez, the legendary gateway to the desert and caravan crossroads for centuries. A journey of strong contrasts: the deafening silence of the desert colliding with the colorful chaos of markets, the ancient authority of the Sultans coexisting with urban modernity. An expedition in a land that does not compromise with time, where hospitality is sacred and the horizon seems never-ending

The BHS touch

Don’t turn your back on Niger! We will enter the ethnic mosaic of Tuareg, Hausa and Peul to understand how ancient identities endure beyond geopolitical headlines. We will sit on the beaten earth of villages to listen to stories that never reach the media, admiring the dignity and resilience of those who live in the heart of the Sahel. No tourist folklore. Only the slow rhythm of markets, the silence of the desert, and deep respect for communities that defend their history. We travel where others stop, because knowledge is the only possible bridge

Trip itinerary

DAY 1-2 – Arrival in Niamey

DAY 1: departure from Italy and arrival in Niamey at night or the following morning; airport reception and transfer to the hotel. Depending on the flight schedule, a hotel stay will be arranged between Day 1 and Day 2

DAY 2: after check-in, first impressions of a city far from Western rhythms: slow traffic, motorcycles, improvised stalls, and an atmosphere suspended between African modernity and tradition. Visit to the National Museum of Niger, essential to understand the country’s ethnic mosaic: Tuareg, Hausa, Zarma, Peul. The museum offers insight into pre-colonial history, the French period, and the contemporary dynamics of a complex Sahelian nation. Continue to the Grand Mosque of Niamey, an example of modern Islamic architecture in a predominantly Muslim country. Dinner and overnight in hotel

DAY 3 – Niamey – Kouré – Dosso – Konni

Morning: departure towards the south-east in the direction of the Kouré Reserve, the only area in West Africa where the West African giraffe survives. Guided safari by 4×4 to observe these animals in a completely open environment. The encounter takes place in a Sahelian semi-arid landscape, among acacias and scattered villages. The presence of giraffes here is not only naturalistic, but symbolic: they represent one of Niger’s conservation success stories

Afternoon: continuation towards Dosso, an ancient center of Zarma power. Visit to the Sultan’s Palace, still today a living symbol of traditional authority. Insight into local monarchical structures and the role that sultanates still play in contemporary society. Lunch stop along the route (Dogondoutchi area), in a rural context. Arrival in Konni in the late afternoon

Evening: dinner and overnight stay in Konni

DAY 4 – Konni – Yama – Tahoua

Morning: crossing of typically Sahelian landscapes: reddish earth, circular villages, moving herds. Arrival in Yama, known for its extraordinary banco architecture (raw mud bricks). The traditional mosques and granaries tell the story of a millennial construction technique adapted to the extreme climate. A walk through the village to observe daily life: women busy grinding millet, children in Koranic schools, men gathered in the shade.

Afternoon: continuation towards Tahoua with stops in small villages along the road, coming into contact with local communities still deeply rooted in traditional structures. Arrival in Tahoua, a gateway city towards the northern desert.

Evening: dinner and overnight stay in Tahoua

DAY 5 – Tahoua – Agadez

Morning: departure towards the north. The landscape progressively changes: increasingly sparse vegetation, wider horizons, isolated Tuareg villages. Picnic along the way in a nearly desert environment.

Afternoon: arrival in Agadez, the symbolic city of Niger and a historic crossroads of trans-Saharan routes. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Agadez preserves a historic center built entirely of banco, with labyrinthine alleys and fortified houses. First exploration of the old city.

Evening: dinner and overnight stay in Agadez

DAY 6 – Agadez

Morning: visit to the famous Grand Mosque of Agadez, whose mud minaret is the tallest in the world built in banco. The structure represents the Islamic and Saharan identity of the city. Continuation towards the Sultan of Aïr’s Palace, a testament to the traditional power still present today. A walk through the historic center among ancient caravanserai houses.

Afternoon: meeting with members of the Tuareg community to understand the clan system, nomadism, and the social transformations of recent decades. Optional possibility of a short camel excursion in the surroundings of Agadez.

Evening: overnight stay in Agadez

DAY 7 – Agadez – Tanout – Zinder

Morning: departure towards the east, crossing increasingly desert-like territories. Tracks and roads alternate in an austere and immense landscape.

Afternoon: arrival in Zinder, the ancient capital of Niger and a Hausa cultural center. Visit to the Sultan’s Palace, the historic Birni district with its fortified dwellings, and artisanal workshops specializing in traditional dyeing and leatherwork.

Evening: dinner and overnight stay in Zinder

DAY 8 – Zinder – Niamey

Morning: early wake-up in Zinder. Before the airport transfer, a short outing to the historic Birni district as the city slowly comes to life: markets opening, dyers beginning to work fabrics in traditional vats, and leather artisans preparing sandals and saddles. Transfer to the airport and domestic flight to Niamey. From above, one can sense the immensity of the Nigerien territory: a seemingly infinite expanse of ochre earth and sand that makes it clear how vast and sparsely populated this country is.

Afternoon: arrival in Niamey and transfer to the hotel. Time to rest after long days on the road. In the afternoon, a more in-depth visit to some of the capital’s popular neighborhoods to understand Niger’s contemporary urban dimension: informal markets, spice vendors, colorful wax fabrics, and scenes of daily life along the main arteries. A stop at the Grand Marché to observe the commercial vibrancy and the interaction between different ethnic groups living together in the capital.

Evening: final sunset on the banks of the Niger River. Dinner and, depending on flight schedules, overnight stay in Niamey or direct transfer to the airport.
