GHANA TOGO BENIN
Ghana, Togo, and Benin: three destinations that come together to create an unforgettable overland adventure in the heart of West Africa. Starting from Accra, Ghana’s vibrant and eclectic capital, we will travel along the historic Gold Coast, a fascinating coastal region dotted with centuries-old forts and castles linked to the transatlantic slave trade, before continuing eastward into Togo. From Lomé and its famous voodoo market, the journey heads inland through tropical forests and savannah landscapes, where we will encounter the legendary Tamberma culture. Between Togo and Benin, we will explore the fortified tata villages, considered among the most photogenic traditional mud-brick settlements in Africa. The journey concludes along the Beninese coast, between Ganvié, often called the “Venice of Africa”, and Ouidah, the spiritual heartland of the voodoo religion.

TRAVEL ITINERARY
DAY 1: departure from major Italian cities on flights to Accra, the capital of Ghana. Depending on the flight schedule, arrival late in the evening or overnight flight.
DAY 2: arrival in Accra and day dedicated to discovering the Ghanaian capital. Vibrant, energetic, and constantly in motion, Accra is one of the most dynamic cities in Africa and the true beating heart of Ghana, one of the continent’s fastest-growing countries. Visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, dedicated to the father of Ghanaian independence, followed by the historic district of Jamestown, with its weathered colonial buildings and authentic atmosphere. The itinerary continues to Independence Square, home to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks: the white Independence Arch crowned by the Black Star, symbol of the nation. Dinner and, for those who wish, evening exploration of Accra’s lively nightlife scene, considered among the most vibrant in Africa.
Morning: departure by private vehicle westward along Ghana’s Gold Coast toward Cape Coast. Arrival at a seaside resort overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, followed by lunch and time to relax.
Afternoon: visit to Elmina Castle, dramatically positioned above the Gulf of Guinea. Built in 1482, it is the oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa and one of the continent’s most powerful historical sites. Once a central hub of the transatlantic slave trade, the castle preserves the memory of the countless enslaved Africans who were imprisoned within its walls before being deported to the Americas. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of remembrance and reflection.
Evening: dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Cape Coast
Morning: departure inland toward Kakum National Park, one of Ghana’s most important protected rainforest reserves. The park shelters an extraordinary biodiversity, home to tropical birds, reptiles, butterflies, and several species of monkeys hidden within the dense forest canopy. No visit to Kakum is complete without walking the famous suspended canopy walkway, a thrilling “sky walk” of rope bridges hanging high above the forest floor, offering breathtaking views over the jungle.
Afternoon: return to Cape Coast for a visit to Cape Coast Castle, another haunting fortress linked to the history of the transatlantic slave trade and today recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the sun sets over the Gulf of Guinea, time to relax by the ocean and reflect on the layered histories of Ghana’s coast.
Evening: dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Cape Coast
Morning: very early departure from Cape Coast, heading east along Ghana’s coastline and passing once again through the vibrant streets of Accra before continuing toward the Togolese border. Late-morning border crossing and arrival in Togo, the second country of the journey, a small but culturally rich nation suspended between ocean, tropical forests, and ancient traditions.
Afternoon: arrival in Lomé, Togo’s lively seaside capital. Time to embrace one of the city’s favorite rituals: gathering along the beach at sunset, where music drifts through the warm Atlantic air and locals relax with friends, dancing, conversations, and cold beers by the ocean. Hotel check-in and first immersion into the atmosphere of the city.
Evening: dinner and evening in Lomé
Morning: early departure for a visit to Akodessawa Fetish Market, one of the most unusual and culturally significant traditional markets in West Africa. Togo, like neighboring Benin, is deeply connected to the spiritual traditions of Vodun, and Akodessawa is considered the world’s largest market dedicated to ritual practices and sacred objects. Among stalls filled with herbs, talismans, carved fetishes, animal remains, and ritual ingredients, the visit offers a fascinating insight into belief systems that continue to shape daily life across the region. Departure afterward toward Kpalimé, nestled in the lush tropical highlands of western Togo, around two hours from Lomé.
Afternoon: excursion to Mount Agou, the country’s highest peak, rising to 986 meters above sea level. The surrounding hills are covered in dense vegetation, cocoa plantations, waterfalls, and traditional villages connected by ancient footpaths still used today by local communities for trade and agriculture. The atmosphere here feels worlds away from the coast, cooler, greener, and deeply rural.
Evening: dinner and evening in Kpalimé
Morning: early departure toward the Ghanaian border for an excursion to Yikpa Waterfalls, one of the hidden natural gems of West Africa. Reaching the falls requires a scenic hike of around two hours through dense tropical vegetation, crossing remote forest trails surrounded by towering trees, birdsong, and the humid atmosphere of the rainforest. Still largely untouched by mass tourism, Yikpa offers a rare sense of wilderness and isolation.
Afternoon: continuation north toward Atakpamé, a lively town nestled among the green hills of central Togo and known for its colorful market culture and fertile tropical valley landscapes. Arrival in the afternoon, hotel check-in, and time to experience the slower rhythm of inland Togo.
Evening: dinner and overnight stay in Atakpamé
Morning: departure for a long journey toward northern Togo, crossing a constantly changing landscape where the lush tropical forests of the south gradually give way to the wide savannahs of the north. Along the road, dozens of rural villages reveal a quieter and more traditional side of the country, far from the coastal cities.
Afternoon: arrival in Nadoba, gateway to the homeland of the Tamberma people, one of West Africa’s most fascinating cultural communities. Originally migrating from present-day Burkina Faso centuries ago, the Tamberma are renowned for their iconic tata: extraordinary mud-brick fortress houses crowned with conical thatched roofs. More than simple homes, these architectural masterpieces were historically designed for defense and survival, perfectly adapted to the harsh environment and to centuries of tribal conflict. Today, they remain inhabited family dwellings and form part of a UNESCO-recognised cultural landscape shared between Togo and neighboring Benin. Hotel check-in on the edge of the Tamberma region, surrounded by the vast northern plains.
Evening: dinner and overnight stay at the hotel
Morning and afternoon: a full day devoted to exploring the remarkable tata villages scattered across the borderlands between Togo and Benin. The journey begins in Koutammakou, the UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape renowned for preserving the traditional architecture and way of life of the Tamberma people. Here, the iconic tata houses, fortified earthen homes shaped by centuries of adaptation to climate, spirituality, and defense, rise from the savannah like sculpted monuments. After crossing into Benin, the exploration continues among the villages of the Somba-Betammaribé communities, culturally connected to the Tamberma and equally famous for their extraordinary mud-built dwellings. Despite modern borders, trade routes, traditions, and family ties still unite communities on both sides of the frontier, especially around the Boukoumbé region. In the late afternoon, arrival at a characteristic lodge inspired by the traditional tata architecture, followed by time to relax immersed in the silence of the northern savannah.
Evening: dinner and overnight stay at the hotel
Morning: early departure for a long journey southward through the changing landscapes of Benin, gradually leaving behind the dry northern savannahs and entering the greener heart of the country. Near Natitingou, stop at the beautiful Kota Waterfalls, hidden within the lush scenery of the Atacora Mountains. Surrounded by dense vegetation and rocky cliffs, the falls offer a refreshing pause immersed in one of Benin’s most scenic natural environments.
Afternoon: continuation toward Abomey, the historic capital of the former Kingdom of Dahomey, once among the most influential and militarily powerful states in West Africa. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, Dahomey became a major political and commercial power, leaving behind a complex legacy deeply intertwined with regional warfare, royal traditions, and the transatlantic slave trade. Arrival in Abomey in the late afternoon, followed by hotel check-in and time to relax.
Evening: dinner and overnight stay in Abomey.
Morning: visit to the remarkable Royal Palaces of Abomey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important historical complexes in West Africa. The palaces, built by the kings of the former Kingdom of Dahomey between the 17th and 19th centuries, preserve royal courtyards, bas-reliefs, ceremonial spaces, and collections of artifacts that offer insight into the political, spiritual, and military traditions of the kingdom. After the visit, departure toward Cotonou, Benin’s economic capital and largest urban center.
Afternoon: arrival in Cotonou and hotel check-in, followed by an exploration of the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Visit to the famous Dantokpa Market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa, a maze of colors, sounds, fabrics, spices, and everyday life. The itinerary continues with a stop at Amazon Square, dedicated to the legendary Agojie, the women warriors of Dahomey whose history inspired the “Dora Milaje” in popular culture. Dominating the square is the monumental Amazon statue, symbolizing courage, resilience, and the historical role of women in Beninese society.
Evening: dinner and evening in the nightlife venues of Cotonou.
Morning: departure toward Porto-Novo, the elegant and understated capital of Benin. Smaller and more tranquil than Cotonou, the city offers a fascinating blend of Afro-Brazilian heritage, colonial architecture, and local traditions. Walking through the historic center, we discover a city where cultures and religions coexist harmoniously: the cathedral and the great mosque stand side by side, symbolizing the unique identity of Porto-Novo. The visit also reveals colorful streets, old colonial buildings, and lively everyday scenes that capture the quieter soul of Benin.
Afternoon: transfer by traditional pirogue to Ganvié, often called the “Venice of Africa,” one of the most extraordinary stilt villages in the world. Founded centuries ago by communities seeking refuge from slave raids, Ganvié rises directly from the waters of Lake Nokoué in a labyrinth of wooden houses, floating markets, schools, and narrow canals navigated entirely by boat. Exploration of the village by pirogue and on foot offers an intimate look into a way of life shaped by the lake itself, undoubtedly one of the most unforgettable highlights of the journey. Return to Cotonou in the late afternoon.
Evening: dinner and evening in the nightlife venues of Cotonou.
Morning and afternoon: departure from Cotonou toward Ouidah, one of the most historically and spiritually significant cities in West Africa. Facing the Gulf of Guinea, Ouidah was once one of the principal slave ports of the Kingdom of Dahomey and today remains the symbolic heart of the Vodun (Voodoo) religion, recognized by UNESCO as an essential part of Benin’s cultural heritage. The visit follows the poignant Atlantic slave trade memory route through the famous “Slave Route,” the path walked by enslaved Africans before deportation across the Atlantic. The journey culminates at the moving Door of No Return memorial, overlooking the ocean and commemorating one of the darkest chapters in human history. At the same time, Ouidah reveals another side of its identity: the deep spiritual traditions of Vodun, a religion often misunderstood in the West yet profoundly rooted in philosophy, ancestry, and the relationship between the visible and invisible worlds. Visit to the renowned Temple of Pythons, one of the most important Vodun temples in the country, with the possibility of witnessing a traditional ceremony accompanied by music, dance, and ritual symbolism.
Evening: dinner and overnight stay in Ouidah.
Day 14:Departure from Ouidah toward Cotonou for the final moments of the journey. Depending on the flight schedule, there may be time for a last exploration of the city. Transfer to the airport for the overnight international flight.
Day 15: flight with stopover to Italy, arrival on Day 15 in the evening… and until the next adventure!
