LIBYA: CYRENAICA
On the other side of the Mediterranean, on the eastern coast of Libya, a peninsula stretches from the desert to the sea, almost forming an ideal triangle with Italy and Greece. Along its coastline remain the ruins of thriving urban and trading centers that once played a key role in the Classical Age. The so-called Cyrenaic Pentapolis, first Greek and later Roman, was formed by legendary cities such as Cyrene and its port Apollonia, Arsinoe (modern-day Tocra), Barca with its port Ptolemais, and Berenice (modern-day Benghazi). These extraordinary archaeological sites remained inaccessible for years because of the Libyan civil war, which fragmented the country and led Cyrenaica to proclaim its own independence. Today, however, they are finally open to visitors once again, revealing treasures hidden for far too long.
