LIBYA: CYRENAICA
On the other side of the Mediterranean, on the eastern side of Libya, a peninsula seems to stretch out from the desert to the sea, almost forming an ideal triangle with Italy and Greece. Along its coastal strip, bearing witness to the great development and strategic importance that this area of North Africa held during the Classical Age, remain the ruins of flourishing inhabited and commercial centers of enormous historical value. The so-called <<Cyrenaic Pentapolis>>—a Greek administrative unit first, and Roman later—was formed by mythical cities with evocative names like Cyrene and its port Apollonia, Arsinoe (modern-day Tocra), Barca with its port Ptolemais, and Berenice (modern-day Benghazi). The wealth and magnificence of these incredibly important archaeological sites remained inaccessible for several years due to the civil war in Libya, which caused the fragmentation of the country and saw Cyrenaica proclaim its own independence from Libya itself. They are now open to visitors once again, and their precious jewels, hidden for far too long, can once more showcase their beauty.
