A land of monks and smiles, the last among Southeast Asian countries to open up to tourism and isolated from the outside world for many decades, Myanmar still preserves a traditional soul, closely tied to the strong spirituality of Theravada Buddhism that permeates the country. Our itinerary will begin in the former capital, Yangon, to admire the marvelous golden Shwedagon Pagoda bathed in the sunset light, followed by a boat trip through the pagodas and floating gardens of Inle Lake. We will visit the spectacular and massive temple complex of Bagan before reaching Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, and the important historic cities nearby. A stunning and still little-known country, inhabited by one of the kindest and most welcoming peoples in the world, where it feels like stepping back in time for an authentic immersion into the heart of Buddhist spirituality.
The BHS touch

TYPE OF TRIP
Travel to a country experiencing strong tensions related to the ongoing civil war. Tourism is virtually non-existent, and the itinerary may be subject to changes due to the current situation. This is a road trip with some relatively long transfers by car/minivan and one domestic flight; no demanding trekking is planned, except for the 777 steps that lead us to Mount Popa.

DAY 1: depending on the flight schedule, departure from Italy and flight with a layover to Yangon. Overnight flight.
DAY 2: arrival in Yangon in the morning. Entry procedures, meeting with local guides, and hotel check-in. The afternoon is dedicated to exploring the former capital of Myanmar, with visits to the centrally located Sule Pagoda and the Botataung Pagoda, including a visit to its inner stupa. We conclude the day with a visit to the marvelous and spiritual Shwedagon Pagoda, which will take your breath away as it glows in the evocative sunset light. Street food dinner on 19th Street in Chinatown and overnight stay in Yangon.
Morning: after breakfast, a stroll through the Bogyoke Aung San Market and the Chinatown area. Next, a visit to the Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda, which houses a reclining Buddha statue over 60 meters long, followed by a transfer to Yangon airport.
Afternoon: early afternoon flight to Heho, the airport for Inle Lake. Boat transfer to Nyaungshwe and hotel check-in. Free time in the town of Nyaungshwe.
DAY 4: full day dedicated to navigating the spectacular Inle Lake in Shan State, among stilt houses, floating gardens, and pagodas. It will be a unique opportunity to observe the life of the local population, which takes place almost entirely in contact with the water, as we visit several villages on the lake. Dinner and evening in Nyaungshwe.
DAY 5: after breakfast, we begin the day with a visit to the large market, which rotates every five days and where tribes from the surrounding hills, dressed in colorful traditional clothing, converge to sell their products. It will feel like stepping back in time—a true immersion into local life. We continue exploring Inle Lake by boat through long, scenic canals; this will be a great chance to photograph the Intha fishermen with their unique style of rowing with one leg. Next, a visit to the fascinating village of Indein, with its complex of ancient shrines and stupas. Dinner and evening in Nyaungshwe.
Morning: breakfast, departure by car/minivan towards Mount Popa. Lunch stop along the way.
Afternoon: arrival at the foot of Mount Popa. This important pilgrimage site for the Burmese is located on the summit of a dormant volcano. We will climb the 777 steps to reach this sort of “Burmese Mount Olympus,” where the main Nats—spirits highly revered and feared by the Burmese—are said to reside. Mount Popa is the perfect example of religious syncretism between Buddhism and traditional pre-existing Burmese cults. Be careful not to wear red, black, or green clothing—you wouldn’t want to offend the spirits! Continuation of the journey by land towards New Bagan, arriving in the late afternoon for hotel check-in.
DAY 7: located on the banks of the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar’s main river, Bagan boasts the highest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, and stupas in the world; over 2,200 remain to this day in various states of preservation! Before diving into the exploration of this place steeped in history and spirituality, we will visit the crowded local market. The day is dedicated to the countless temples of Bagan, including the Ananda Temple, perhaps the most famous, followed by a spectacular sunset view from one of the tallest temples. Dinner and evening in New Bagan.
DAY 8: we begin the day with a visit to a village for a total immersion into local life. The itinerary continues with visits to more temples in Bagan, followed by a trip on a private boat along the Irrawaddy River to reach the Shwezigon Pagoda and enjoy a spectacular sunset. Dinner and evening in New Bagan.
Morning: after breakfast, departure for Mandalay, arriving by lunchtime for hotel check-in.
Afternoon: visit to artisan workshops producing gold leaf and wood carvings. Next, a visit to the Golden Palace Monastery, famous for its intricate wood sculptures, and the Kuthodaw Pagoda. We will stop at the U-Bein Bridge at sunset, a 200-year-old teak bridge and one of the most photographed and iconic sites in Myanmar.
Morning: after breakfast, transfer to the pier. On board a private local boat along the Irrawaddy to Mingun. Visit the Mingun Bell, the world’s largest bronze bell, and the unfinished Mingun Pagoda (intended to be the largest pagoda in the world). The other major attraction is the Hsinbyume Pagoda, a wonderful whitewashed temple.
Afternoon: transfer to the ancient city of Inwa, visit the evocative Bagaya Monastery, built entirely of teak, and its surrounding stupas, the Maha Aungmye Bonzan, and the Nanmyint watchtower. Later return to Mandalay.
